William Shatner (born March 22, 1931) is a Canadian performer, musician, vocalist, writer, film director, spokesman and comic. He’s composed a collection of books chronicling his experiences playing Captain Kirk and being part of “Star Trek”, and has co-written several novels set in the “Star Trek” universe. He’s also composed a collection of science fiction novels called “TekWar” that were adapted for television.

He’s since worked as a musician, writer, director and celebrity pitchman. From 2004 to 2008, he starred as lawyer Denny Crane in the television dramas “The Practice” and its own spinoff “Boston Legal”, that he won two Emmy Awards as well as a Golden Globe Award.

He was subsequently contracted to play Kirk for the Star Trek show and held the job from 1966 to 1969. During its first run on NBC, the show pulled in just small ratings and was cancelled after three seasons. In 1973, he returned to the function of Captain Kirk, albeit just in voice, in the animated Star Trek show. In his character as Kirk, Shatner notoriously kissed celebrity Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura) in the November 22, 1968, Star Trek episode, “Plato’s Stepchildren.” The episode is popularly mentioned as the primary case of an interracial kiss between a white man along with a black woman on scripted television in America.
