Tom Joyner came from an educated family: his grandfather Oscar was clearly one of just 3,000 black doctors in the United States, earning a degree in medicine in 1909. In Chicago, he first worked at WVON, doing the morning show, but left the station after just three months to work in a competition, WBMX FM. By late July 1978, nevertheless, he was hired away by Charles Mootry, general manager of station WJPC (AM) (now WNTD). This station, named for “Johnson Publishing Company,” was possessed by John H. Johnson, owner of such black magazines as Jet and Ebony.

Though Tom Joyner was initially considering a vocation in music, his family discouraged it, and he shifted his focus to working in broadcast medium. He started working at his college radio station. After graduating, he was hired by multiple radio stations, first in Montgomery, Alabama, and after that in Memphis, St. Louis, and eventually, Chicago. He was offered two jobs at leading radio stations in 1985, one in Chicago as well as the other in Dallas, Texas. Tom Joyner made a decision to take both occupations, and flew back and forth between the two stations daily for another eight years. In 1994, he started hosting his own show, “The Tom Joyner Show”. It’s now heard in almost 100 cities, and is air under the umbrella of his own production firm, Reach Media. Along with his radio show, he helmed a favorite television show from 2004 – 2006.
