Prince Rogers Nelson (created June 7, 1958), known by his mononym Prince, is an American singer songwriter, multi instrumentalist, and performer. He’s made ten platinum records and thirty Top 40 singles during his career. He’s composed several hundred tunes and creates and records his own music for his own music label. Moreover, he’s boosted the livelihood of Sheila E., Carmen Electra, the Time and Vanity 6, and his tunes have been recorded by these musicians and others, including Chaka Khan, Cyndi Lauper, The Bangles, Sinad O’Connor, and Kim Basinger.

Produced in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Prince acquired an interest in music at an early age, composing his first song at age seven. After record tunes with his cousin’s group 94 East, seventeen-year old Prince recorded several unsuccessful demo tapes before releasing his debut record, “For You”, in 1978. In 1984, he started referring to his backup band as the Revolution and released the album “Purple Rain”, which functioned as the soundtrack to his movie debut of exactly the same name.

He released three more solo albums before debuting The New Power Generation group in 1991. In 2000, he started referring to himself as “Prince” once again. He’s released thirteen albums since then, including his latest, “20Ten”, released in 2010.

Prince has a broad vocal range and is known for his flamboyant stage presence and costumes. He’s sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling musicians ever. He’s won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and an Academy Award. He was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, the very first year he was eligible. “Rolling Stone” has rated Prince No. 27 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Prince’s music continues to be influenced by rock, R&B, soul, funk, hip hop, blues, new wave, electronic, disco, psychedelia, folk, jazz, and pop. Prince initiated the “Minneapolis sound”, a hybrid blend of funk, rock, pop, R&B and new wave that’s affected many other musicians.
