Oscar De La Hoya (born February 4, 1973) is a retired American professional fighter of Mexican ancestry. Nicknamed “The Golden Boy,” De La Hoya won a gold medal in the Barcelona Olympic Games soon after graduating from James A. Garfield High School. His grandpa Vicente, dad Joel Sr. and brother Joel Jr. were all fighters. De La Hoya formally declared his retirement in the sport in a press conference held in La on April 14, 2009.

De La Hoya has got the better of 17 world champions and has won ten world titles in six different weight classes. He’s also created more cash than just about any other fighter in the annals of the sport, an estimated $696 million pay-per-view income.

De La Hoya founded Golden Boy Promotions, a combat sport promotional company. He’s the very first American of Hispanic ancestry to own a national boxing promotional company and among the few fighters to take on promotional duties while still active.

De La Hoya faced Manny Pacquiao (47–3–2) on December 6, 2008 at the MGM Grand in Vegas. Although Manny Pacquiao went to the battle recognized as the top pound for pound fighter on the planet, some pundits supposed that 147 pounds may happen to be too much above his natural weight against the larger De La Hoya. Nevertheless, Pacquiao’s trainer Roach was certain of a success as he said that De La Hoya could no longer “pull the trigger” at that point of his career. De La Hoya, who had been favored to win the bout because of his size advantage, was anticipated to be the heavier of the two on fight night.
