Jonathan Niven “Jon” Cryer (created April 16, 1965) is an American actor, screenwriter, film director, and film producer. He’s the son of Gretchen and David Cryer. Although Cryer acquired popularity by starring in these movies, it took several years to get success on television. The shows in which Cryer starred, like “The Famous Teddy Z”, “Partners”, and “The Trouble With Normal”, failed to continue long.

Cryer’s long run of unsuccessful TV jobs eventually finished three years after. Against the wishes of CBS executives (who were conscious of his previous failures), he was cast in 2003 to impersonate Alan Harper on the hit comedy show Two and a Half Men. To date, he’s earned seven Primetime Emmy Award nominations and two wins for his performing work with the show. In a remark on the show’s high ratings, he said: “When you are on a show that is fighting for survival each week, you cease trusting your instincts, as you believe, ‘My instincts have not worked so far.’ But when people certainly such as the show and therefore are viewing it in great amounts, it has an enormous amount of pressure off you. It lets you trust your instincts and go with what’s worked for you personally before.” After former costar Charlie Sheen’s departure in the series, Cryer’s character has since become the show’s essential character, largely because of the show’s retooled storyline. Before being cast for Two and a Half Men, Cryer auditioned for the part of Gaius Baltar about the Sci-Fi Channel’s imaginary Battlestar Galactica, but the part went to James Callis. In 2008, Cryer appeared with Laurence Fishburne and James Cromwell in the movie Tortured, as well as in 2009 costarred with James Spader in the movie Shorts. Cryer made a guest appearance on the situation comedy show Husbands in its second season. Cryer did however get a credit on the picture for “additional narrative content.”
